The sweetest

I loved watching these two beautiful people support each other, and grow together. I particularly loved how the inevitable tension breaking point wasn't about their relationship, but about something they could love and help each other through.
Beautiful.

This is a sweet opposites-attract romance, low angst, with wonderful MC’s and a great set of secondary characters that will leave you feeling happy and starry-eyed. To say that Jameson is socially awkward is putting it mildly, but he is undeniably charming even in his awkwardness and rambles in the most adorable way. It’s Will’s lucky day when Jameson bids on him in a charity bachelor auction, and he is smart enough to realize his good fortune instantly. I loved that they connected so easily, even though at first glance they couldn’t be more different. Jameson and Will have some obstacles in their way, but I loved that once they’re clear on where they stand, they never doubt each other. Will is the greater surprise of the two MC’s, and seeing him so unexpectedly vulnerable in certain moments was just…everything. We also get to reconnect with Elijah and Shaw, which was a lot of fun! They’re pretty amazing! I also loved Kira and Ali, Jameson’s best friends, the way they support and tease each other is awesome. I’d love a novella or some bonus scenes where we could get to know these two better! I also really liked the finding family aspect of the story and enjoyed the scenes with Will and Leon a great deal. I also liked the storyline about Will’s family. It showed how difficult it is to break certain patterns of behavior and family dynamics, but also that people can always surprise you. The writing is beautiful and nuanced, the characters well-rounded and complex. Recommend!

Me gustó mucho el anterior libro, pero creo que me quedo con este. Es una historia sencilla y bonita, de esas que releería en cualquier momento.

Good for the soul!

This book was incredibly romantic and full of feel good emotions. If you need a low angst romance with a lovely HEA? Grab this up! I hope we’re getting more in this series. And the cover? Adorable!

Refreshing for a couple of reasons

When I first started this book my head just wasn’t really in it so I felt kind of bored while reading it. I decided to take a break from this book to read something else and that helped to clear my head and restart the book with a fresher mind. I was more interested in the book after my hiatus and I actually found it cute and engaging. The MCs had nice chemistry; it follows the trope of their relationship starting out as a fling but then both characters eventually want more sort of pine after each other. I just think this was a cute romance like the first book in this series.

I always find it refreshing to read a romance that isn’t filled with a bunch of white people. I’m glad that Riley is using this series to show the diversity that exists in the real world. Riley also gave us a little social commentary on what it means to be Black in the US i.e. driving while Black. For Riley, this is the most political she has ever been in her novels and I like that we are acknowledging that race does exist and it does actually matter in relationships. Now the commentary was kind of shallow and didn’t go super in depth so don’t expect a full-fledged conversation on Blackness and the nuance of interracial dating. I hope that Riley continues in this direction though and I hope she dives deeper because of what to have constructive conversations about race we need to go deeper even if that means making readers uncomfortable. I myself welcome this new direction from Riley because I want to see more diversity in romance so I hope she continue with this.

I do think that the novel was kind of repetitive at times. Once the MCs were established in their relationship they kind of fell into repeating the same things. The ending was also rushed. This book is less than 300 pages so I wish that the book to more time to express the ending in more detail. Show us, don’t tell us. Will’s situation with his family was a conversation that I wish we got to see in full detail rather than it being told to us and summarized. His tension with his family was his main character flaw and we didn’t even get to see it resolved. I wish Riley took the time to really describe this entail because I didn’t need to be rushed. The epilogue was also just kind of meh. However, I do like that this book didn’t have the lame third act break up. I always hate that trope.

Overall, this is a solid romance. The characters have chemistry even if it is kind of gushy at times. I like that Riley is showing that non-white people do actually is exist in the real world and that it’s possible to have non-white friends. I appreciate that the book dips it’s toe into race relations discussions and I think it can go even further.
