Akhirnya ada buku Sherlock Holmes yang bisa saya kasih bintang 3! Buat saya, Hercule Poirot tetap detektif nomor 1.

I have read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and A Study in Scarlet many times, and I have read the Hound of the Baskervilles a ton of times, as that is probably my favorite standalone novel. I knew that The Return of Sherlock Holmes was written after Doyle basically killed off Sherlock Holmes over the Falls, but I didn't remember that many of the stories. But I really enjoyed this one and loved just about all of them as I tried to figure out what the solution was (I was not usually successful). Personally, I found this to be a very strong collection with a nice variety of mysteries. As always, Stephen Fry makes it all the better, although I still laugh at his American accents. He tries hard, but it still makes me laugh.

Read all the Holmes by Doyle. Glad they exist in a legitimate way.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have hated Sherlock Holmes, but he did a damn fine job creating a character everyone would love.

This collection outdoes both its collection predecessors in overall quality. While some of the stories in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" are better than these, this collection is filled with mostly great stories and no one star stories. I could tell from the weakness of the stories in "Memoirs" that Doyle was getting a bit tired of Holmes. However, his break clearly filled him with new ideas.
Once again, I'm doing a bit of an update from my 2012 reviews, but I agree far more than in my Memoirs review.
"The Adventure of the Empty House" 4/5 (2012 Rating: 4/5)
This is a much more exciting adventure than "The Final Problem." Also, it concludes Sherlock's dealings with Moriarty's gang as he faces the second most dangerous man in London. The threat here is established through conviction and skill rather than the info-dump we got with Moriarty in "The Final Problem." I love the tension produced by the long wait for the criminal. Also, Watson's reaction to the reappearance of Holmes is awesome.
"The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" 4.5/5 (2012 Rating: 4.5/5)
A classic tale of vengeance. Sherlock must clear a man of murder despite the evidence stacked against him. This one might be a bit far fetched, but I think the solution and near-miss nature of it make the tale far more solid.
"The Adventure of the Dancing Men" 5/5 (2012 Rating: 5/5)
This is one of the best tragic Holmes tales. Holmes must break a code to uncover a woman's past before it is too late. The code breaking nature may not be for everyone, but this definitely has to go down as one of the most classic tales for the practical tips on code breaking and managing an effective and reasonable Holmes defeat.
"The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist" 3.5/5 (2012 Rating: 2.5/5)
A woman is hired by a gentleman to be his housekeeper, but she is continually followed to work by a lone cyclist. Adding to her troubles is that her boss's friend is a jerk with the hots for her. This story is both uneven and overlong, but I appreciate the historical context of this story more. It definitely takes the marry or work situation more seriously than most any other Holmes story.
"The Adventure of the Priory School" 4/5 (2012 Rating: 5/5)
Holmes must help retrieve a lord's son who has disappeared. This involves almost all of Holmes' classic tricks and a good bit of deduction. On revisit, this story also feels a little long; plus, knowing the ending does take some of the enjoyment out of this rather dark tale.
"The Adventure of Black Peter" 3/5 (2012 Rating: 3/5)
An admirer and imitator of Holmes requires the master's help why he gets stuck on the apparent murder of a violent sea captain. It turns out the student has much to learn. The first story of the Hopkins series is fine. I like the bookend, but the center is muddled.
"The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton" 5/5 (2012 Rating: 4/5)
Sherlock must turn to crime to thwart a malicious blackmailer. Sherlock fights for justice and not the law, so, when put to the test, Holmes will break the law to save a client. I think Milverton is everything Moriarty is not. His initial confrontation with Holmes tells us all we need know. Milverton has such an insular scheme that Holmes cannot trap him or force him out; plus, time limit! Milverton is the villain I love to hate and receives shamefully little attention.
"The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" 3/5 (2012 Rating: 2.5/5)
Sherlock Holmes must figure out why someone is smashing busts of Napoleon. This crime seemed really obvious to me in 2012, and I think it continues to be that way. However, it is enjoyable.
"The Adventure of the Three Students" 3.5/5 (2012 Rating: 3.5/5)
Holmes must save a professor's reputation after an important test is stolen from his study the day before the exam. I like where the suspicion lies and for what reasons. I just love the charm of the smallness of the crime. Another fine deductive Holmes case with interesting twists and classic gambles.
"The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez" 3/5 (2012 Rating: 4/5)
Holmes must help Hopkins solve a murder where the only solid evidence is a pair of gold prince-nez glasses. I was far more underwhelm by this one; it seems both too small and too large upon revisit. The reveal was sad, but the lead-up and method of the reveal weren't good enough. Also, I feel like the real criminal gets away with everything.
"The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter" 4/5 (2012 Rating: 3.5/5)
A rugby player disappears. This is one of the stories that involves something Holmes has no knowledge of (sports) and a keen adversary that (unlike Moriarty and Milverton) could be a force for good or evil. Holmes' blind spot in sports leaves him making one of the most hilarious comments on the "purity" of sports ever. However, the ending of this story is incredibly striking even on the second read.
"The Adventure of the Abbey Grange" 4/5 (2012 Rating: 3/5)
Holmes is called once again by Hopkins. This time the case seems all but closed; however Holmes isn't so sure. I went back and forth on this one, but I think this is the best of the Hopkins stories. The conclusion is definitely the best part, though I was also really take by the gumption of our Aussie heroine.
"The Adventure of the Second Stain" 2/5 (2012 Rating: 2/5)
Holmes must help retrieve a paper of international importance and solve a related murder. This story has several issues along both gender and colonial lines, and its bigness really hurts the final, somewhat mundane, outcome. It is a low point, but it still beats out "Orange Pips."
This one has five marriage stories, and I think all of them show different aspects, though I'm not a fan of "Second Stain." There are a few absolute classics with "Dancing Men" and "Milverton" being the tops, but I think most of these are worth it.
