KJ Charles at her best. A cast of characters that feel absolutely alive with all their flaws and idiosyncratic glories. The depths of character examined through the plot is just delightful. Diverse cast, and unflinching in examining historical issues of inequality as they arise. Love seeing unapologetically progressive, compassionate characters. The pace of the story is blistering; I picked it up and couldn't put it down. Hope we get more like this from KJ Charles. This is probably the tightest story from her since Any Old Diamonds, or arguably Think of England.

I almost DNFed this one because it felt slow and cold for the first fifth - I only kept going because the reviews were so positive! I'm glad that I did, because I do love Charles' writing, and it definitely picked up more for me in the second half.

Another lovely and brilliant novel from KJ Charles. This one has less of a focus on romance and more on the murder mystery, but that didn't make the romantic scenes any less sweet. The mystery kept me engaged as well, though parts of the ending left me a little unsatisfied, but overall I really enjoyed it.
