Interesting look at an important part of Nazi history. I really liked the story, but struggled with the writing style. It felt like the author was trying too hard to be different.

It took me a while to warm to this book, I never nothing about the content or anything about the book prior to opening it.

Once I got into it I couldn't put it down, how it is written took some getting used to but I found it fascinating. A very interesting part of history and one that whets the appetite and gives new hero's to revere and remember.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all, whether fans of historical fiction/non fiction. I don't know whether this is fiction or non fiction. It straddles both in my opinion.

I was kind of in a reading slump before I started this book. I liked the narrator's voice and his presence, and found the story interesting, but ultimately way to slow and boring for me, maybe because of my reading slump, maybe because the book wasn't for me.

What I enjoyed most about this book were the narrator's account of his research and writing process. The excitement of finding new source material, how subtle distortions and embellishments creep in despite the writer's efforts to prevent them, the jealousy the writer feels when he hears that someone else is publishing a book on a similar theme -- all of this rang true to life. The story of Operation Anthropoid itself did not move me or give me much insight into Nazi Germany or the Second World War. I realize I am in a minority, as most reviewers seem to have been frustrated with the narrator's digressions and and wanted more of the historical section proper.

Loved this approach to historical fiction -- the author inserted himself into the story, walking us through the challenge of creating fiction out of reality.

HHhH recounts the assassination of Heydrich, head of the SS and architect of the Final Solution. What sets this apart from more conventional historical fiction is the author includes himself as a character in his own novel: he constantly analyses his approach, wrestles with self doubt, and at one point compares himself with other novelists!

It's a fascinating idea - but at times the hesitant, self-analytical approach undermines the power of the narrative. However, HHhH is still a highly intelligent and inventive novel.
