alright! so! haven't finished a book in a while. but... i'm a sucker for rom-coms, lesbians, rom-com lesbians...
i really enjoyed this book. the dialogue, the scenes, everything. sometimes it's just really nice to read a book that doesn't make you burst into tears crying or pulling your hair out insane, but just a plot that feels warm, wholesome, light-hearted, and real. i seen parts of myself in both alex and molly, but especially molly (wouldn't be surprised if she happened to have virgo placements, but alex definitely probably had some too. both of them had a kink for fixing things)
also kinda feel like this book is literally exactly why i root so much for friends to lovers. infatuation and fantasy, limerence and the obsession with love and desiring to be loved is so easy! so easy to acquire. so easy to attain. but the reality? finding someone that you actually feel safe with emotionally? that you can laugh with and crack stupid jokes to? that doesn't make you feel ashamed or embarrassed for who you are? well, you know. that's another ball-game.
before i read this book, i was studying a lot on the concept of limerence and molly showed it so perfectly. how easy it can be to fall into fantasy when you feel ostracized, alienated, or simply feel like you can't imagine anyone liking or desiring you in that way when you've closed yourself off to the world. and it just feels so much safer to stay in that realm until you end up realizing that reality can be beautiful too, even if it's not the same type of beautiful that you hyped up in your head so much. and specifically with limerence, how so much of it is built upon a fantasy and then you actually get with the person and realize you fell in love with what you created in your head. not the actual person themselves.
seeing alex come to the conclusion that their romantic situation was similar to a recreation of what they experienced with their family upbringing was so real to see. and i wish topics like that were more blatantly explored in rom-coms. im glad to see that her mom was able to get help and that she didn't demonize her mother for having an alcoholic addiction.
maybe it's the ace in me, but! i feel like i would've also been okay if they just ended up as really cool best friends. i understand why they both ended up desiring each other—but i can't help but feel like sometimes queer people just end up dating each other because they're best friends? or because it's like, "wow we feel so safe around each other and well you're not ugly so might as well date!" you know? kinda... forced vibes, i guess. but that's simply my perception of it all. i think they're beautiful regardless and i am happy to see them run off into the sunset together.
(can't lie though, falling in love after going from enemies to friends in one month is CRAZY. and fuck natalie.)
