This would have been a 4.5 if Armistead Maupin didn’t decide to make Anna madrigal talk like she was British for the first time in the series. Seriously, why did her country of origin change during the 5-year break?

Now that I've finished it, I've come to the conclusion that this, and the previous two, are John Buchan (39 Steps) novels updated for the latter 1/3 of the 20th century. It's nice to see someone other than the strapping, young, rich, white, man take the lead and charge headfirst into a situation that he's unequipped to handle. And it's nice in this one to see that the person who takes charge isn't necessarily the one who provides the resolution. It may be clichéd in how it handles the characters, but those novels exist for those clichés.
What makes the novel wonderful is how extraordinarily good at sappy Maupin is. He's really sappy, and it shows. That sappiness is actually the real draw of these novels for me.

The last 100 pages had me at the edge of my seat, could barely put it down.

Best one in the series. Series is strongest when leaning into mystery elements with lots of character moments between.

These books are entertaining, but this one was racist. There's a character, Bambi Kanetaka, who is a total "dragon lady." It's fine to make her a villain, but she doesn't need to be a racist caricature of an Asian person. Boo.
