I did quite enjoy this book. Japanese contemporary has slowly become a loved genre of mine.

I did love how interwoven the forestry aspects were to the character's personal growth and the slight magical realism touch with the mountain gods. The descriptions of Mt. Kamasuri and the forest surrounding it were simply wonderful and really gave me that feeling of FOMO and wanderlust.

I will say, I know in my heart of hearts that this isn't a five star read, but I honestly don't know what I am dinging that last .75 for.

This is the book to read if you are experiencing 'I just want to quit my life and go live in the woods' kind of energy. It's not so much that there is really a plot beyond the daily life of forestry and the passing of the seasons, which honestly is the very thing I find so charming about it. Escapism at its finest, with beautiful descriptions and reverence for nature, amusing and kind-hearted villagers, a sense of community, and a feeling of satisfaction that seems impossible to find in modern life. I truly loved it.
