This was in my TBR list for the #3 of the series (the popular one) and I wanted to read the first one and also saw it had a low average rating and I never read any book with such low average rating so I was curious.

Shortly said: It's not good at all and the low average rating makes sense (at least for me).

Longly said: There was no plot, we get to know 'the garden', but as soon as the characters actually enter it the book ends.

The poetry and ryhmes weren't good. There were some pages full of anaphers (where a sentence starts with the same word) and it got really annoying and didn't fulfil the actual reason for anaphers; Highlighting importance. By the way importance that is also my 3. reason why the book is bad.

The book wasn't important or relevant at all. The characters had really weird conversations and it made no sense. Imagine being a tour guide and someone asks you if you love them and if you are afraid of your father. What is that supposed to mean? And who would ask this a person you just met? Or ask this in general? The conversation topics are all over the edge.
(Examples: “I think men are afraid of their fathers,” + “I smell it on people . . . ,” Lęina continued. “I smell sadness the way a dog smells fear.)

The wording was so weird and not understandable at all. The book begins right with; For fifteen hours she’d been nameless.
Or maybe it’d been fifteen years. I think EVERYONE can distinguish between hours and years. That is more than just a bit of a different time span.

The book was insane, every sane person, like me, shouldn't read this. But if you are curious like me; Go for it. I won't stop you, but be warned.

Listen, I've never been a fan of Tomi Adeyemi's writing style, so tbh the choice to read this is on me.

That said.... girl what the hell is this??? Did Amazon have a gun to your head when you wrote this? Is your ransom note hidden somewhere in this mess of a story? Blink twice if you need help Tomi!

The concept of this story was kind of interesting. A mother left behind a book and she wanted to follow it. It gave me Madame Web vibes. However, I just didn’t like the writing in this one. I felt the story was long enough & gave enough backstory. However, I didn’t like all the repeating itself. It took away from the book in my eyes. I just didn’t really connect with this story and I feel it was the writing, not the concept, that did it for me.

Offered to read for free for Amazon Prime members, this is the first in a collection of short stories with the common theme of those searching for some type of personal truth or knowledge.

Haunting and with no definitive outcome or answers, the reader must infer what happens next. This sort of nebulous story never goes down easy for me, leaving me more confused with plenty of questions that will never ever be answered. Sigh.

that was... not it.
i don't know what the author wanted to say, maybe she had a really interesting idea in her head. but it just felt pointless. i was waiting for the book to reveal if the mc was dead, if her mother had killed herself, but nothing. not a great start to the into shadow collection.
