God Help the Child by Toni Morrison

A dark, haunting novel that seems to pulse with two forces: time and evil. Children, the embodiment of innocence, are repeatedly put in close contact with evil; the story pulls back to see the children as adults living out their traumas in the aftermath of what they have witnessed, then moves in close again to more children who have suffered, showing how inevitable suffering is, how nobody is exempt. The story snakes around between different points of view, switches between third and first person, travels quickly like fire so that you’ve finished the whole thing before you know it.

Morrison makes writing seem easy, she is a master of the craft. The poetry in this book is spectacular, all the more dazzling because of the darkness that surrounds it. There’s something desperate about the book, in many ways it seems quite hopeless, and yet there is love in it, although even that is overshadowed by the inevitability of darkness. I found this harrowing and do not want to rate it 4 stars and yet to rate it lower would be an insult as despite being in many ways unpleasant it is a masterful work of art.

Lessons learned:
•Toni Morrison’s prose fills my soul. She inspires me transmute my emotions into words and spill them out onto paper.
•It’s time for me to tend to my childhood wounds, to listen to my younger self’s cries. These wounds are still scarring and preventing me from connecting with those around me.
•each being in this earth is deeply tangled in our own narratives. When we are able to authentically meet someone else in their entanglement of stories, (when connection is made) magic can happen.
