The Black Flower is the most wonderful book, in the most gut-wrenching, heart breaking, earth shattering way. This is definitely not an easy read; not only will you have to devote the time to read it, but you will also have to take the time afterwards to let the enormity and weight of Bushrod Carter’s story settle in.

Although the ending was predictable, I was hung in suspense the whole time, waiting on how each individual strand of the story would intertwine.

I read this to fulfill one of the reading challenge categories through the library: “A novel that takes place during the Civil War.”

I have very little interest in novels that take place during the Civil War. If you do, then check this one out. It’s well-written. It takes place within a few days, and Bushrod and his regiment are fighting in the bloody Battle of Franklin.

It was kind of sluggish reading. I thought the plot was weak. But details were alright.

A very dense slog. As I recall, it only covers a day or two of the main character's life. Bahr uses gorgeous language, but sometimes I just wanted the descriptions to stop so the story could move forward. It is a lovely story, however.

Wow, so superb. If you want an experience, pick this one up. The writing puts you right into events and the aftermath of a battle in the Civil War. I kept forgetting that this is historical fiction, it feels like a narrative non-fic read. The writing is so descriptive, yet not overdone, and some of the lines are highlight worthy...something I truly never slow down to savor. These characters will forever be a part of my life and I know that these people were real, not just hist fic characters. It's almost uncanny the way this author describes and writes, almost like he was there himself...perhaps he was??! I plan on reading [b:Pelican Road|3292090|Pelican Road|Howard Bahr|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1367429438s/3292090.jpg|3328583] and hope to be as immersed in the events as I was in this one.

Another Battle of Franklin novel, on the heels of The Widow of the South. I think I liked this one a bit more, stylistically.
