"[Alexithymic individuals] manifest sudden and unpredictable episodes of crying, laughing, aggression and other emotional displays which are out of proportion to the aggravating stimulus, or discordant with the specific event. When questioned regarding the reasons for the outburst, they are often unable to link the behaviour with any memories or provocations, and may manufacture an excuse. For example, a mature-aged alexithymic man would sometimes burst into uncontrollable laughter when somebody was upset or had physically hurt themselves, including once when I had dropped a heavy case on my foot and was clearly in pain"
