I read it as a recommendation of a friend, years after I left my undergraduate studies in political science and after I got in a history masters. If had read it 10 years before, I would probably tried political science somewere else.

Man like Luttwak have a gift, they can explain things to everyone, even people that do not have the same political view. He dose it because he doesn't assume the other side for idiots our make strawman arguments. He writes better then most academics and that is a really low bar, but well is what it is.

The book is very smart, written as a so it your self guide for power changes, where we get a good and in depth analysis of the source of political power. If there is anything missing is an analyses on the economical power. Non the less, it's a great book for someone trying to understand politics a little better.

Very informative about the history of coups and the general structure of how to pull one off. Luttwak frequently mentions how Islam is not compatible with tolerance, secular rule, etc, doing the classic islamophobe 1-2 of taking the most fundamentalist followers of it as representative.

Very entertaining and I learned so much- his writing style is so engaging and the book doesn’t feel overly academic. I’m not sure why other reviewers seem to think this is a satirical piece… this is 100% not satirical, it’s quite literally a handbook to a successful coup. It introduced so many different parts of history and conflicts I knew very little about!

This book has been on my To Read shelf for years, but recent events bubbled it to the top. It does what it says on the box: Luttwak's classic guide to staging a coup d'état. Although it references coups I've never heard of, this 1968 book still holds up extremely well, especially if you add "Internet" and "mobile phones" to the list of services you need to neutralize.

Recommended for fans of strategy, or I guess people who just want to know how coups work.
