What to say about this novel. At first, it depressed me. I’m used to indulging in books where the hero rides out to defeat the bad guy with ease, but how does one defeat the overwhelming odds from the depths of poverty? That was the question I kept asking myself as I cautiously turned the pages. Francey herself kept me reading since I admired the precocious Brooklyn breed girl so much.
Her determination to overcome her circumstances and the way she found such joy in the small things kept me sustained through the darker parts of the novel.
This book also seemed to shine a light on the way the poor are oppressed not only by the government but by the social standards in place that keep them turning on each other. The differences between Francey and her brother Neely are also stark since she has to go above and beyond to keep from getting scolded while Neely can do the bar ministers and receives heaps of praise.
The ending of this book really had me choked up though after going on such a long journey with our heroine. I feel like I’ve aged 20 years in the last 8 hours. This is definitely a book everyone should read at least once.

Textured and #real book even if I don't like child protagonists. I'm happy it worked out for them in the end. And sissy is that girl!
