Great writing, interesting characters, amazing world-building.

Downgrading a smidge after mulling it over a little more, and only because I think that the 'exciting' parts, the action scenes, where adrenaline is supposed to be flying - didn't really deliver that feeling for me. It is very matter of fact, very objectively written. Meaning there wasn't a significant build-up to get you in the moment. I, as a reader, was kind of floating above it all, witnessing everything as it happened, but didn't feel gripped and in the middle.
This DEFINITELY isn't a bad thing, I thoroughly enjoyed the book nonetheless. However, looking back, I do believe it is something that lacked in my reading experience just a little. Hence the .25 deduction in my rating.

I struggled so hard to get through this book. I found it dull and difficult to get into. There was lots of violence and battle and killing and I didn't click with any of the characters.

I'm really glad I read the book as Gemmell is a fantasy legend so I've ticked him off the list.

Fans of pyramids, powerful beings that ruled the Earth before humans and military strategy enthusiasts will love this

I originally read this when it was first published, but other than enjoying it, I can not remember what my thoughts on it were at the time.
Now, I realise the style of writing is different to the other novels by David Gemmell, at least those I have re-read over the past year. The phrasing seems a little stilted to me, which took a while to adapt to. However, this does not detract from the story or characters, both of which are of his usual high standard.
The start is fairly unassuming, but from there constantly builds the personalities and plot details to a stunning conclusion.
I found it very interesting to realise what cultural myths inspired this story, which just increased my enjoyment.

This is one of the most unusual Gemmells books. Some fans don't like it, but I do. It plays with a new style of magic, though it reuses the idea of world turning upside down.
