This is a book full of court intruige, family politics, religious tensions, and at the heart of it all, a single relationship forged first from duty and then from love. So much happens from the very first paragraph of this book, plunging you immediately in a world full of connections and implications you don't at first fully understand. And then it unfolds around you, the intrigues and schemes at first slipping by between long moments of family life, then crashing into each other with tremendous implications for our main characters. Every character in this book feels motivated by their own purposes, in an intricate dance of personal and political agendas. I was captivated the entire time.

And that doesn't even touch on Libicki's poetic writing when called for in the songs, the laments, and the words of the Law. I was truly blown away by this book.
