This is a long novella broken into two pieces with four short stories, taking place in the same universe, stuffed in the middle.

The novella was a not bad romance story with Laurence the abused former Roanoke Beta meeting his human girlfriend, the waitress/archeologist Faith. It didn’t sweep me off my feet though because I didn’t see why Faith falls for him aside from a hunky body and great sex. I like Laurence, but why does Faith?

Some of the short stories were good. One, however, I didn’t like because it was set 60 years in the future when a sort of Were apocalypse has occurred. It was depressing to think all my favorite characters were headed for a much more negative world. The author mentioned she had considered making this setting the start of a new series and I’m glad she didn’t. Emotionally, I need the arc of the series as a whole to continue to improve the Were world, not collapse it.

Anyhow if you’re a big fan, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s not for newbies though.
