"Ich betrachtete mich nicht als Chauvinisten [..]"
Wenn jemand sowas sagen muss, dann ist er meistens ein Chauvi. Und das trifft auch auf unseren "Helden" der Geschichte David Hunter zu. Zum einen werden alle (weiblichen) Charaktere stark auf ihr Aussehen reduziert und die Beschreibung von eben diesem ist das wichtigste.
Er weiß natürlich auch, was am besten für sie ist, wenn es um Schutz vor Monk geht - ist klar ne.
Außerdem fehlt mir hier der Aspekt des forensichen Anthropologen sehr. Es hätte nicht Hunter in diesem Buch sein müssen - jeder andere Chauvi hätte es auch getan.
Trotzdem habe ich dieses Buch fast nicht aus der Hand legen können (auch wenn die Wendungen immer abstruser werden).

Die Frau mit der Hunter in diesem Buch flirtet ist für ihn ein kleines Weiblein, dass er retten muss, das Fräulein in Nöten quasi. Er spricht ihr kontant ihre absolut verständlichen Emotionen ab, genauso ihre Kompetenz, ist wahnsinnig Eifersüchtig und auch Besitzergreifend. So ist er recht wütend, dass sie ihm eine ehemalige Beziehung vorenthalten hat und dass obwohl sie nicht mehr als eine sexuelle Spannung zwischen sich haben. (Selbst wenn sie eine Beziehung hätten, müsste sie ihm nichts über ihre Verflossenen erzählen)Er weiß natürlich auch, was am besten für sie ist, wenn es um Schutz vor Monk geht - ist klar ne.

Forensics expert David Hunter was part of a search for the bodies of the victims of Jerome Monk, who was jailed for the rape and murder of young women. Monk is let out of prison to direct the team where to find the bodies, which he uses as an attempt to escape. He's recaptured, no bodies are found, the search is abandoned, and the case falls to the wayside.
Eight years later, Monk escapes from prison. The head detective from that search, Terry Connors, contacts David to let him know. He also receives a call from Sophie Keller, a behavioural analyst, involved in that search. She sounds scared and wants him to meet her. When she doesn't show, David finds his way to her house, where he discovered her battered, but still alive, body. It appears that Monk might be targeting everybody involved in that ill-fated search.
This was a decent forensic thriller. It took me a while to read, as I had so much going on in my personal life, but once I got past the first 40 pages, I finished it quite quickly. The pacing is on point, leaving little time to get bored. David Hunter is a decent protagonist. But after a while, I couldn't understand why he kept putting up with Sophie's bullshit, other than the fact that he found her attractive. There's a sequence in a tin mine which just goes on and on, and isn't really suspenseful, and requires our otherwise level-headed protagonist to make horror-movie-level dumb decisions. It took me out of the story just when events should have been ramping up. Some of the final plot revelations were quite predictable. But the whole thing is well put-together.
It's pretty standard for this sort of thriller sub-genre, but it got the job done, and I enjoyed being able to escape into these pages during some tough spots in my life. A TV series has just been developed featuring the character of David Hunter, so I will be checking that out.

Wieder ein solider Fall für David Hunter. Ich habe das Buch an einem Tag gebinged, das sagt genug über die Spannung aus!
Aber was hier wirklich gefehlt hat: Die Wissenschaft! Bis auf ein paar wenige Passagen hätte das auch wirklich jeder andere x-beliebige Ermittler sein können. Zudem fand ich die Side Charaktere etwas blasser als in den Bänden zuvor.
Freue mich dennoch schon jetzt auf den nächsten Fall!

Ich mochte das Buch und der Schreibstil hat das gewisse Etwas, was einen gut packt und in die Geschichte zieht.
Trotzdem war ich von den Charakteren eher weniger begeistert und auch David kam mir etwas dümmer vor als in den anderen Bänden. Wenn er mal aufgehört hätte, jedes Mal zu erwähnen, wie unfassbar attraktiv Sophie selbst ohne Make up aussähe, wäre das Buch wohl 100 Seiten kürzer. Der Abschluss bzw. das Ende kamen mir auch eher unbefriedigend vor.

Not my favourite in the 'David Hunter' series but still a great read. The twist at the end was wonderfully shocking, as always. Beckett is fast becoming one of my favourite writers.
