It's extraordinary that, while the first Corum trilogy is one of my all-time favourite fantasy tales—which I've re-read at least four times—I never got around to the second trilogy until now. Perhaps I was afraid it wouldn't be as good. Turns out I was right. I still enjoyed this but just not at the same level. The first trilogy was unputdownable ... this second wasn't. Somehow the icy atmosphere of these tales was so well communicated that I simply couldn't warm to them!
