I am not usually a fan of historical fiction but I really enjoyed this one!

a good introduction to the concept of maternity homes and the history of abortion access in canada. but please don’t let this be your only look into it, this is very much just a white woman’s perspective

i don’t know what to say about this book. it was amazing, but that doesn’t do it justice. it brought to life so many different forms of motherhood and highlighted what its like to be able to choose vs not choose when you get to be a mom. some characters hit really close and i just need to thank everyone who made it possible for me to live in a state where i’ve never been worried about not having a choice

I appreciated this debut novel for providing me with information I didn't know. I'd never heard of the Jane network, but I was not surprised at all to learn of it's existence. I imagine in some form or another such networks continue to exist and/or are re-emerging due to the latest rhetoric regarding Roe vs Wade. I can also see how this book will probably be on some religious or right to life zealot's "ban books" list. What is the Jane Network? Well it was (possibly still is) an underground network providing women with safe options to obtain an abortion.
What I struggled with in Looking for Jane was the enormous weight and sadness, but most of all the abject anger I felt while reading it. There were just so many characters carrying heavy stories and it was too much for me. I'd have liked this book more if it was less if that makes sense.
Even thinking on it now (hence why it took a while to get this review done), makes me want to throw something. No one, absolutely NO ONE has the right to tell a woman what to do with HER body.
My low rating doesn't reflect the author's ability to tell a compelling story and especially a debut at that. It simply was too hard for me to read about the terrors women were subjected to.
Despite my rating I'd still recommend highly, it is a valuable story.
