I started this series looking for some good books about Jack the Ripper and I found "The Cutthroat" which turned out to be book 10 in the Isaac Bell series. After liking and finishing that book I decided to read the series. I enjoyed most of the chase and am now working on The Wrecker however the more I read the more trouble I have rooting for the protagonist Isaac Bell. He is the best at everything. He is rich. He gets the perfect girl. He always has the perfect hunches. He is "perfect". I personally find it very very hard to root for or really care about a protagonist like that. It really annoys me and takes away from my enjoyment of the books. I am hoping this changes as the series goes on because I enjoy the time period and ideas of the books so far but I don't know if I'll go through the whole series if it just continues to be about perfect Isaac.

Final note. The editor sure could have convinced Cussler to cut some more of the book out. Having a full page (several times) just describing someone starting a car got pretty old pretty quick.

My husband reads Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt) books so I picked up this CD set (not Dirk Pitt) at a library sale. We listened to it on a recent long road trip. It was a good story with a nice narrator. Nice the way the author weaves in historical events.

Plot was ok. Characters were ok. Dialogue was embarrassingly poorly written.

I really enjoyed this book. I think I enjoyed it far more than the NUMA books, actually. There are some parts in the story that are a little stretched on fact but yes, I will grant artistic license there and Cussler handled it well. His treatment of male-female romantic relationships continue to amuse me. They are very sudden, and some might say abrupt. I cannot help but compare and contrast it with how someone with a more feminine perspective might approach romantic development.

A highly enjoyable read, nevertheless.

Clive, you let me down. Normally I love your stuff, but this one couldn't hold me for 100 pages.

This was the first book I've read by Cussler that did not feature Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin, and despite the popularity of those novels, I really enjoyed this one. It took place primarily at the turn on the 20th century and was about a detective, Isaac Bell, who was trying to catch a ruthless bankrobber known as the Butcher Bandit, due to his penchant for killing all the witnesses of his robberies. The story culminates with a train chase across the west, which results in the fleeing train landing in the bottom of a lake. The book has plenty of action with a little romance thrown in, and I enjoyed the historical element as well. I give it a B-.

Read through book on tape. Lots of historical details and a very good story. My favorite Cussler novel. Actor reading the novel was excellent.
