An interesting take on mental resistance in German-occupied France that can be read in one sitting

This is one of my favourite books of all time. And that is saying a lot. The microhistory approach to the Nazi occupation of France from the perspective of an author who was Résistance member speaks of the power of passive resistance. In an occupied France, the Nazi propaganda of the 'marriage' between the nations is mirrored as a deception in the relationship of the three characters. There's no collaboration as propaganda would want us to believe, only conquest, even when the conqueror is a 'nice guy' like von Ebrennac. He has a captive audience of two, who reflect back at him the absolute idealization of his twisted Nazi values. The truth is that the most tyrannical ideology can be accepted from a place of naïveté and idealistic want, but the reality of its implementation doesn't mean it will open the eyes of those who uphold it.
