I very much enjoyed the first two books in the series and while I haven't read the third, I somehow managed to own this one and the opening page told me that, for the most part, the third book wasn't required reading for this one, so I gave it a go. And, really, I didn't need the third book, but if I had read that one first, I may have been able to avoid this mess.
This book (and, presumably, the one before it) completely undoes a major component of the first two books that made them enjoyable to me. I won't spoil what, but it was really hard to get around.
Also pretty unbearable was Brewer's seeming disinterest in even trying to make this book compelling. It has a STRONG political message that I actually agree with, but the story and even his writing suffers in favor of just beating the reader relentlessly over the head with his message, to the point of having two characters literally be buffoonish caricatures of real human beings.
At the end of it all, I am just so disappointed with this book.
