I picked up Border Lass immediately upon finishing the previous book, as I was also gifted a copy of this book along with the first.

And as others promised, this book was a definite improvement, particularly on the romance front. The dynamic for Amalie and Garth is completely different, with her having dark secrets in her past that have made her reluctant to marry. Garth, meanwhile, is more of a sweet, openhearted sort and exactly what the wounded Amalie needs. There are some boundary-crossing moments, and it seemed a bit odd that, due to her past she’d be so open to some of his predilections so quickly, but otherwise, their dynamic was a much more interesting one than the one between Wat and Meg in the prior book.

I continued to enjoy the intriguing, convoluted politics of medieval Scotland, especially as this book begins with a new king taking the throne. I’m glad I had the previous book’s world building to work off of, so I could see how things developed in the time between books. The interplay between the various clans is intriguing, and I loved seeing where the author drew from real history, including when it came to a certain dastardly Earl of Fife.

This is another engaging historical from Amanda Scott, and definitely much more well balanced than the previous in the series. If you love historical romance with a heavy emphasis on the history, while also not neglecting the romance, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
