A picture book about a duck who likes to bake pastries! At its heart, this book is about overcoming fear and trying new things.

The illustrations hit the spot for me. It's a story created with "watercolor, pencil, crayon, and lots of beautiful paper (old & new)." The collage of papers on the page was neat.

Reviewed from a library copy.

George is an anthropomorphic goose, a homebody who enjoys hearing all the stories of his friends' explorations in faraway places, but he always has an excuse that keeps him from joining them (including a mountain of ironing...). When winter comes, and George is all alone, his non-migrating bear friend comes to visit, wondering why he is still here. George finds the courage to tell him why, and they work together to address the real reason George is not migrating with other birds. Beautiful illustrations combining cut paper, drawings, watercolor, and old-time engravings. Some illustrations contain French text. Great for investigating why individuals make the choices they do, how to be a supportive friend, and the benefits of expanding one's horizons.

Somewhere Else focuses on a bird who is always too busy for something that he's supposedly naturally able to do, like fly away for the winter.  It's a great metaphor for continuing to find excuses instead of doing something important, doing something you've felt you've always were meant to do.  But as George, the bird, realizes he wants to fly, he also realizes that it's a little too late and must enlist the help of his friend to help him achieve his dreams.  This is a great book about friendships, helping each other, and doing something you've always wanted to unabashedly.  The illustrations and narrative are just absolutely beautiful, and perfect for a chilly winter day.

This book was a surprise. The pages are a collage of old advertisements and a simply drawn goose and his friends. Gus is a goose with a lot on his plate. There's usually something cooking in his oven or any of a number of hobbies that keep him busy. But no matter what has his attention, he's far too busy to fly away for the winter. This funny story is full of Gus' excuses as he and his friends banter over the merits of staying home or travel. When winter comes and Gus is left behind, he must decide whether he should overcome his final excuse and go explore the world. Funny and charming.

Woah. What a twist. Really George should have been honest. Also Pascal needs to work on his boasting. I wish there would have been repercussions for their fibs but it is still a sweet story.

A duck stays home baking pastries while all the other ducks go "somewhere else". Can he overcome obstacles to fulfil his desires to explore? It's a kids book so
of course he can! And he does it in style
. Gorgeous illustrations, my kid and I enjoyed and discussed the collage technique.
