A very interesting book historically, socially, and medically.
A collection of essays - although more like short stories - from a renowned Victorian surgeon. The first and main story is that of Joseph Merrick, also known as 'The Elephant Man'. Treves befriended him and looked after him, and Merrick's tale becomes really quite heartwarming.
The other stories are various experiences and memories of the surgeons from throughout his career - medical cases, memorable patients of unusual character, appalling hospital conditions. Some recounts are quite gruesome and disturbing (the Victorians seem bonkers), others are emotional or life-affirming.
The writing is concise and really enjoyable to read, witty at times. So glad I found this unusual little book.

ספר קצר ומעניין. הייתי שמחה אם היה יותר פרטים ויותר עומק, מדובר יותר במאמר מאשר ספר.
