I have enjoyed several other books by Joana Starnes, but this one is one of the most irritating things I’ve ever read. All of the business with the
ghosts
was tedious, and the
attempted murder mystery
felt like an attempt to drag things out near the end. But even in the best parts of the book, the Elizabeth-Darcy scenes, the writing was bloated. Is it possible this was a very early work that should have been edited down to half its length before being released. Joana Starnes is a great writer of JAFFs but you can skip this one.

Very well written and very different. Love the spirit idea. Clever weaving in some P&P quotes and various characters.
I do wish we could have learned what happened to Charlotte.

Reading the there was the addition of the ghosts of Lady Anne and George Darcy had me a bit skeptical to read this. However, the reviews were pretty good so I succumbed to my wanting to read more of Darcy and Elizabeth and read this book. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the story line. Having Elizabeth and Darcy like each other from the beginning was a nice change. Although Darcy's scruples with his feelings for Elizabeth and her inferior connections were still present int he story line as well as being a reason that he almost loses her.

I loved seeing the teasing of Mr. Bennet as he sees the love Darcy has for Elizabeth and not letting him get by easily. However, Mr. Bennet encourages at the same time. I also liked seeing the love struck, desperate side of Darcy.

The only reason I do not give this 4 stars is because I felt that some of the times the story took the point of view of the ghosts and it didn't add too much to the story but was more a filler that infuriated me because I wanted more focus on Elizabeth and Darcy.

Interesting twist with after life

After life dominated the plot in this novel. Elizabeth and Darcy are never indifferent to each other. But Darcy is still stuck up, and it takes a big change in Elizabeth’s circumstances for Darcy to make a move

Joana Starnes does paranormal.

The book is just as much about the dead as it is about the living. Thankfully, no zombies.

The story begins with old Mr Darcy observing his own dead body and then meeting the late Lady Anne Darcy who apparently has been haunting Pemberley for years.

He has to come to the terms with his current (ghostly) state and also deal with his (dead) wife's resentments and grievances. While they did not have a bad marriage as such, it was certainly a distant one. Together they discover Wickham's plot against Georgiana and work hard to learn to move objects and get through to Darcy to warn him.

Meanwhile in Longbourn the Bennet family is one member short - Mrs. Bennet expired while giving birth to the sixth child who also did not survive. As a result, Mr. Bennet is paying more attention to his daughters, more money is saved and he has also started earlier relationship with his heir Mr Collins who ends up marrying Mary.

When Darcy and Bingley come to the neigbourhood, the Bennets are much more socially adept and only three of the sisters are out, Kitty and Lydia being considered too young. Darcy & Elizabeth get along very well and both really like each other. Darcy is still very much convinced that Elizabeth and her family are beneath him so he takes off and also talks Bingley out of returning to Longbourn, mainly because he does not want to be thrown into E.-s company.

So we've established that Darcy has not behaved very well.

Never you worry, HE WILL BE MADE TO SEE THE ERROR OF HIS WAYS AND MADE TO PAY FOR IT!

Through a complicated chain of events, Mr. Bennet ends up marrying Lady Catherine. Darcy, now relieved that E. has finally good connexions, goes a-courting in Rosings, colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana in tow.

Only by then he has trouble getting Elizabeth even talk to him.

There will be more ghosts and drama and side stories galore.

I had good fun with this one, not one of my favorites from this author but a decent yarn nevertheless. And the audio narration is very good.

I originally read this book for three reasons. One: I was on a Pride and Prejudice kick, so this was in my Amazon Kindle recommendations. Two: It was a free download. Three: It has one of the WORST covers I’ve ever seen. Seriously, I took a screenshot and had a whole conversation with my sister about how bad it was. The words, “I wonder if those transparent people are ghosts,” were said. (I was not wrong, y’all.)

This is a variation on the original story, so your cast of characters is familiar if you’ve read the original. But, I love when people retell this story and give glimpses from Mr. Darcy’s point of view, which this author does. Plus! There are ghosts! They’re hilarious, and they give us a sort of omniscient point of view in some parts.

There were lots of surprises, but I found myself more amused than confused. Period romance? Check. Ghosts? Check. Romantic comedy? Check. MURDER MYSTERY? Yep, got that too! To be honest, once I accepted that this was a ghost story variation, my reaction to everything else in the story was, “Why not?”

If you enjoy Pride and Prejudice, period romance, romantic comedies, or just quirky stories, I recommend this book to you.
