Short stories are challenging for me--their rhythm and arc are unexpected, tightly wound but often full of empty spaces that in a longer work are filled with characterization, thematic development, or plot. This one depends on the gaps in relationships, in parent/child, husband/wife, lover/exlover to be slowly inexorably bridged, as the second sentence puts it.  This is the third book I've read recently that deals with dementia (previously: Where You Come From, and The Swimmers.
