One of the few times where I think the movie is better than the book. Still a good book though.

This is, and always will be, one of my top five ever. It reads so easily that you may not notice the care with which it's constructed. You may not get all the humour and satire the first time. But you probably won't read it just once. It's that good.

OK, there are a few slow parts, and readers probably disagree about which ones they are.

And, book or movie, Count Rugen's death is one of the greatest scenes ever written. I mean, who cheers at a BOOK? I did.

for a book titled The Princess Bride, this was awfully sexist. i enjoyed the adventures and fighting and the personalities of the characters. i guess feminism wasn't yet a thing when this book was first published.

Pleasant read.

As someone who has seen the movie a bunch of times but never read the book, I appreciated the additional backstory we got that served to flesh out some of the characters (e.g. Inigo, Fezzik)

On that note, I was definitely wishing I was watching / hearing the actors from the film the entire time

I was fine with Goldman’s framing device of this being an abridged version of a non-existent novel, but the decision to include all the made-up family anecdotes as well as a mix of real and fake details from his life as a screenwriter felt a bit self-indulgent and just served to confuse matters

Buttercup being a non-person whose entire worth was solely a product of her looks and weight - a recurring problem with Goldman’s writing of various characters here - was a drag
