Readable but kinda wish I’d DNF’d it.

Best quote: “I knew enough about fate to know that being careful had very little to do with living or dying” (p. 110).

I hated when Halvard said, “I wanted to feel strong as I stood before that Nādhir. I wanted to believe that I was with Espen believed I was” because there is NO way that his family doesn’t think he is strong and capable …. Most likely they in part feel that way precisely because they DO know his fragile and “unworthy things that lay deep in [his] heart” (p. 214). It felt like an unfair and inaccurate depiction of Fiske, Eelyn, Iri and his mother and/or the relationship he has with them based on “Sky in the Deep”. [Yes, I understand it could be argued this is Halvard’s skewed perspective, but it just doesn’t fit for me.]

Unfortunately, the dual POV also made a large part of the book repetitive in an underwhelming boring way.

In the audio version I also did not like the choice of how Iri and Fiske’s characters were voiced I feel like they were reversed from how written. [IMO Fiske should’ve had the deeper voice.]

The ending was decent, but maybe not worth slogging through the first 28 chapters (~7hrs) to get there.

This felt neither bad nor great. It just was. I didn't really connect with either of the main characters so I felt ambivalent about wherever the book took them. I did like seeing mentions of the characters from the first book though!

This is a companion novel to Sky In The Deep. I did not read that before reading this, and I don’t believe that you have to to enjoy this book.

The story follows Tova, who was found at 6 years old in a half burned funeral boat on the shore of another land. She was found by Jorrund. By the boat and the markings on her skin is was obvious that she was from the Highland. She was a Kyrr. Jorrund takes her in as his own.

Growing up Tova believe that she was a sacrifice to the God of her people. He uses her for what she can do. She is a Truthtounge. She can read the stones for the Svell. And Jorrund uses her to help his clan.

The battle scenes were few and short lived. But they were good! I loved how once the story got started it went fast. The first part was slow. But we needed to know the background of Tova. We needed to learn more about her when she couldn’t tell us herself due to not remembering who she is.

After reading this, I would am looking forward to reading Sky In The Deep and I hope I love it just as much as I did this one!

3.5 stars! This was a good book but I think the whole time I was reading I was waiting for it to be AS GREAT as Sky in the Deep; which totally isn’t fair but I couldn’t help it. The positives: Adrienne Young writes the best battle scenes I’ve ever read! I love this about her books. Her descriptions are so vivid that I can picture exactly where I am in every scene. And her characters - I love them - they are so well developed which again goes back to how well she describes them. The negatives: I found the back and forth narratives between the two main characters broke up the flow of the story too much for me. I found myself just getting really into one character’s voice and story point of view and then I was ripped out of it. It felt too chopped up. It’s not that I mind a story told from multiple perspectives, I just thought each character didn’t get long enough with each chapter to really immerse me in their personal story. Overall, I will still read every book this author writes because she is an amazing storyteller. And, I will still recommend this book to anyone who loved Sky in the Deep!

I won an advanced reader’s edition of this book from St. Martin’s Press in a goodreads giveaway.

I’ll be honest, it was not as good as the first one. It lacked the emotional punch to the gut. The romance was a little rushed but luckily it didn’t linger on it for all that long. It just lacked something and I don’t know what. That being said, it was still wonderfully written.

This book was not as good at the first one, but still enjoyable. The romance was kind of nonexistent.
