This was a hauntingly beautiful thriller with a lot of shocking twists. Margot always feels her relationship with her mother is a bit off, so she goes to seek her roots based on a clue she finds in an old Bible. When she goes to visit her Gram, things go more awry by the minute. Family secrets, frustration, teen angst... I did not foresee the conclusion.

the relationships were really well done and incredible depictions of surviving abuse, but the individual characters not so much. the ending and reveal were a letdown and didn't really go well with the style of the suspense and the things that went down.
Spoilerhaving the reason for all these frankly ridiculous things be rooted in pesticides rather than fantasy REALLY ruined my suspension of disbelief.

Rory Powers has a way of writing things that really creep under your skin and freak you out. There’s something about the imagery in this book that’ll stay with me for a long, long time.

either pick or a scientific or a fantastic explanation, the whole mixing thing doesn’t really work. i understand generational trauma is a big theme in this story, but i think the way it’s done is a LITTLE too on the nose
