I loved the idea, I really did. But, the execution was something I was not a fan of. The whole book asks questions and it's only at the 340 page mark where it really starts answering them. For me, this wasn't the book.

Just not vibing with this book.
The writing is leaning towards purple prose and I'm disappointed. I'm 5 chapters in and the world hasn't been explained, like what is a Kith? Half Kith? Middling? Is it a social class or what?
Honestly, I'm so confused.

I have to be honest: i read this one for the lesbians hehe
The world building was a bit confusing and the world not as captivating as i had hoped
But the dialoge between nirrim amd sid was gold, so good

Sapphic main character and Lesbian love interest. One that I absolutely loved watching develop and grow.
I haven't finished a book in a day in a while. My eyes were glued to the pages, my hands turning one page after another and I just couldn't stop reading. I genuinely loved reading this story, the story of Nirrim. I have grown so fond of her as a character. I wish I could wrap her up in blankets and let her try chocolate milk for the very first time, to protect her against all evil.

I loved Sid too. God, I just loved how Marie took a very popular trope for male characters, the (overly?)confident, flirtatious character and gave so much of it to Sid. To have a female character to be that confident and affectionate of women, it filled my heart with joy. Representation truly mattered and I personally just absolutely loved this. It was one of the reasons I couldn't stop reading - together that I just wanted to know how it ended so incredibly badly and my GOD I need the sequel right now. I can not wait to see what Marie's got in store for us next.

"Apples remind me if a friend," I said. "I miss her."

"Tell me about her," he said, "so that I may miss her, too."

Cons:

-The author has a bad tendency to repeat certain words and reword certain sentences. A lot.

-So there's a sorta flashback early on and we get dialogue from the characters involved--but there are no quotation marks, the spoken words are not italicized, the font isn't different.

-There are some grammacal errors sprinkled throughout the book.

-What good is a swear upon the Gods if they don't believe in them?

-Photographic memory is not magic. I understand they may have not had the term for it here, but I'm confused as to why anyone would think they have magic just because they excel at remembering things in great detail.

-Nirrim had a really stupid moment and gave a key piece of evidence that related to the death of a militia to someone she cared about as a gift. Yet nothing comes of this and everyone already knew
SpoilerNirrim was responsible for what happened
.

-I don't understand the thing revolving around travelers and this island. I can understand half kith not knowing/believing in travelers from beyond the island because of their situation. But when it comes to the middling and high kith, it's...confusing? Some think nothing and no one exists beyond the ocean (which is weird because they have a harbor for ships. Sid came to the island via ship), others have seen travelers, some simply believe in travelers (like they're some urban legend?), others can pick out travelers from kith -- like, what is happening here? This part of the world building feels poorly handled and messy. It was like the author couldn't make up her mind while writing this on what the middling and high kith knew vs their beliefs.

Pros:

-Chapters are short. Some might not like this, but I personally love it. Especially after dealing with books that have somewhat lengthy chapters.

-I freaking love Sid, okay? My love for this character cannot be explained or contained. Just know that I love Sid with every fiber of my being.

-"I don't despise anybody. I am simply not made for marrying." This quote is the definition of me. Thank you.

-I think this author did a great job at how she handled all the different relationships in this book.

-Marvelous slow burn. My new favorite ship here. When Sid told Raven to apologize to Nirrim, just... *chef kisses the air* that was what sold it for me.

-Morah is my favorite side character in this book. She was more of a mother figure to Nirrim than Raven ever appeared to be.

-I love that our main character has green eyes. Not brown, not blue, not some unique mesh of colors. Just green. I think this might be the first book I've read where the MC has green eyes and it makes me oddly happy.

-Nirrim gets the chances to go live with the High Kith for a month and she actually misses her home and her friends. I will forever appreciate when authors do this.

-That ending was...so unexpecting, even though I feel like I should have expected it. Like, damn.

This book ends on a mega cliffhanger and I'm dying over here. I need the next book. I also have to wonder, if we'll get a different POV in the next installment...hmm. all in all, this was a pretty good book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
