not his best, but clearly a path is being cut out for the novels that followed. it was as if I could pick out characters or ideas from this novel and see exactly how they would eventually be worked into 100 years of solitude, the general in his labyrinth, chronicle of a death foretold, etc.
it's a spastic story, but you could feel him working the kinks out, or as another review put it "stretching his muscles" to prepare for what would come next. I loved it because I saw him in it and he is like no one else. but I hope this isn't ever the first GGM book someone picks up to read.

I overall didn't feel anything reading this book.

I can appreciate the masterful writing style and storytelling and the tension was written very well, I just didn't have an emotional connection with the book. Weirdly, this felt like the characters weren't even fully there, but were just pushed to the background.
