Really fun again, great characters and some fun scenes train robbery? snowy temple heist??Wax and Sterris!!! but also there was a lot of stuff dropped in this book that i didn’t really understand. but some really great Sterris moments
This book was an action-packed ride from start to finish! While Shadows of Self hit harder emotionally, Bands of Mourning delivered on adventure, worldbuilding, and some long-awaited character growth… especially for Steris, who is slowly becoming one of my favorites.
The expanded lore of the Metallic Arts and the Indiana Jones-style treasure hunt kept things fresh, and the humor balanced out the high-stakes moments. Wayne is still Wayne (for better or worse), and while I wanted to see more development in Wax’s arc, the plot twists and new revelations about Scadrial more than made up for it.
It wasn’t quite the emotional gut punch of Shadows of Self, but it was still an exciting, fast-paced read that left me eager to pick up The Lost Metal. If Shadows of Self shattered me, Bands of Mourning pieced me back together with a wild, thrilling adventure.

For some reason, I have put this series aside for almost a year - the different direction after the first three books was a bit too extreme for my liking. We went grop a very well thought out fantasy trilogy with interesting characters and strong adult themes to a more YA, light book, which is not bad in itself but was not exactly what I was looking or hoping for.
But here we are a year later, going back to this series with two books left to go. And it’s alright. Not the *best*, but likeable enough despite the general tone. The characters really are the weakest element, but the overall story is good enough to be enjoyable.
Not too bad, as far as a lot of fantasy goes.
