SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

2nd read (June 18, 2025): 4/5 stars

How did Sanderson make a fantasy book feel like a sci-fi book? It's crazy.

I still feel the same about this series as a whole, that the worldbuilding and plot are so interesting, but the characters, while not bad, don't feel as real to me as the other Sanderson characters I've read. Though this book did a similar thing for me that the Well of Ascension did for me; it made this world feel bigger.

I'm still reeling a bit from the ending, though. I'm really excited to get to The Lost Metal, since it's the end of the series, but also the only part of the series I hadn't technically read before (though I legitimately forgot so much of the books over the years that this feels like a first read.

The difference between good and evil men is not found in the acts they are willing to commit—but merely in what name they are willing to commit them in.
Took me longer to read than the other two. I love how Sanderson decided to flesh out Steris and I LOVE her and Wax together. Otherwise, familiar beats, though something didn't fully click. Maybe because Sanderson is setting up the next trilogy with it? Oh well, taking a tad break before i continue.

I think this is the best book in this series, at least the ones I've read so far. Each character really had a chance to shine, especially Steris, who I feel was pushed to the back in the previous books. The storyline of the series really pulled together in this one, and it really expanded the world from the original trilogy. This was the first of the Wax and Wayne series that lived up to the reputation set by the original trilogy.

Twists and turns galore!

What a rollercoaster! I thought that I knew what to expect, but boy was I wrong. To see the betrayals would have taken more than the 2 brain cells I have that are currently active (I have 2 toddlers) but I am still not convinced I would have believed it. The gasps that I gasped would rivaled my mom while I was learning to drive. Big big fan!

Random Favorite Parts:
1. Steris and Wax. Gosh, their relationship is adorable! While not the main plot, following their relationship is so sweet. I want to gush more but I don't want to spoil anything, so I will leave it at that.

2. Inventions galore! Honestly, I have no idea how Sanderson comes up with these things! His creativity in coming up with allomantic weapons/creations that actually seem like they would work (within a magical world where metals give you special powers) is astounding. I am seriously impressed.

3. Mental health. So many of these characters have complex issues that stem from traumatic events in their past. Rather than sweeping past them, Sanderson addresses these issues and allows his characters to feel their pain while finding healing.

Another banger. I think was just expecting more. I was promised more by the community, but the “sanderlanche” was just average.

Still worth my time. Scadriel continues to bloom.

Would have hit harder if I’d been keeping up with these books as they were coming out.

Need to keep thinking.

Excited to see how this all ends.
