Couldn't get into it, apparently it is quite funny, however I wasn't rooting for any of the characters.

Funny to the point of ludicrous, short, Austen touches. Fun. I recommend. There are no particular surprises but that's the only thing that may be a drawback.

My brother saw the movie and said it was great - "very funny." So I bought the book on whim (scanning the shelves at the book store). I found it hard to read because of the language. It didn't really read "hilarious" - has a very dry humor. I have since seen the movie and have an "easier" opinion / perspective. And it's only then that I realized it was originally written in 1932 - THAT explains a LOT!

This is a very interesting read. It is meant to be a parody of melodramatic novels of the time. Some of it was funny/amusing and sometimes I felt I was missing something. This could partially be the dry british humor. The characters were definitly caricatures of the type of people found in a melodrama and it definitely had over the top moments. Overall it was an enjoyable read but I have to ponder on it. P.s. would make a fascinating comedic play.

I didn't quite love this book. Almost. I love the main character, Flora. I love the contrast of her no-nonsense, let's-get-this-done attitude with all the crazy, melodramatic wallowing of the people around her. She's fun to know. But this book was rarely laugh out loud funny to me. I found all the Thomas Hardy parody kind of clunky and hard to get into. Apparently, most people disagree. Everyone's got their own sense of what's funny.

I hardly read classic literature so I’m afraid the satire was lost on me.
