This issue opens with a little homage to friendship. It was nice to see the girls close again, as I think their bond will be a driving force throughout the series. As El and Octavia are brainstorming about what is going on in their city, Pearl starts barking. She alerts them to a swarm of skinless people just outside of the house. I enjoy the art of the skinless people. The eyes don’t look overly complicated, yet they seem to pop, and the art style used makes the muscles look oddly realistic.
The antlered creature scares the skinless people away but attacks El’s dad too. Her mother drives him to safety and tells El that she knows what she needs to do. She calls in her mother’s favour with the witch. She helps El’s father and begins to tell the girls the story of the Foreman taking her up the mountain.
I liked this issue more than the others, I think. It was action-packed, and I really like this witch character, so I’m excited to see what her backstory is!
