I know Tolkien argues that all great stories are about "the fall," but I wonder if that isn't more a reflection of his narrative predilections than a broader truth about literature. There are so MANY more stories besides "the Fall."

Nonetheless, the richness of Arda is resonant and deep. I merely wish more of his narrative arcs in the First Age deviated in structure.

It's difficult to attach to protagonists when they rarely heed counsel from the seers and seasoned counselors in their lives. That said, my character favorites in The Children of Hurin include Brandir, Gwindor, Melian, and Beleg.

I really enjoyed this book, and the more Mythological approach to his story telling. This was hardly a novel, and I loved that about it.

Reads like a legend of old. A little strange at first, but you get into the style of "old tale" and it follows easily, with a single narrative. Much more accessible and interesting than the Silmarillion. Takes place about 6,000 years before lord of the rings and introduces the original Evil of middle Earth.
