That Ellen Emerson White... I'm just hooked. Sometimes her writing is clunky, and her dialogue usually sounds the same, but every time I read one of her books I'm left with a changed perspective on the world that lingers and nags. I'd like to see these reprinted.

I didn't love this book as much as the first one, but it was still fantastic.

The only difference and the slight disconnect I had came from the extra military stuff. There were more combat scenes and more detailed scenes describing weaponry, neither of which I have a whole lot of interest in. I tried my best, but it's hard for me not to skim them a little.

But the characters are still great and I still cried. This just didn't have quite as much of an emotional impact. Still highly recommend the whole series because the writing is wonderful.

This book brings home what the war in Vietnam must have felt like, smelled like. How terrifying it was, and how the kids fighting it were exactly that, kids. Michael, who I first met in the fifth book of this series, makes a lot more sense to me now. And oh, how I love Snoopy.

Mostly, it's giving me a horrifying window into the war that loomed large over my childhood.
