I genuinely have no idea how this came to be on my want to read list, but I'm so glad it did.

I love a good dystopian story and this sure is one. I think the best comparison I could make is this is a more YA version of the circumstances in [b:The MaddAddam Trilogy: Oryx and Crake / The Year of the Flood / MaddAddam|18594761|The MaddAddam Trilogy Oryx and Crake / The Year of the Flood / MaddAddam|Margaret Atwood|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1395435093l/18594761._SY75_.jpg|26341230] but with some other twists. I liked how the narrator switched back and forth every chapter or so, it made for interesting story telling. I am excited to continue on in the series.

I have been recommended this book on more than one occasion since its release in November and I finally picked it up with some Christmas money (before the book buying ban).

*Spoiler alert* Legend follows the story of June and Day, two people from opposite ends of the spectrum. June is one of the brightest kids, scoring the top most score on her test. Day on the other hand failed and was to never see his family again. For reasons unknown, Day is the Republic's most wanted criminal. He does not carry guns, nor does he kill. That is until June's brother gets caught up chasing Day from a break in. Day is wounded and Metias wont give in. So in Day's last few minutes on consciousness he throws his knife. A killing blow, ripping June from her last living relative.

June is the kind of smart that Brennan from Bones is, she isn't quite sure of the social standard and can come off like she is being a smart alec. She was bumped up to their equivalent of university by 4 years and graduates in half the time of any other student.

Day is in hiding from the soldiers but he needs to take care of his family. The family he was forced to leave. He and his friend Tess are almost constantly together and watching his family. If his family gets the red cross on their door, it means they have the plague and are destined to die. One night Day sees his family's door get a red cross. But instead of the usual red cross there's has a line down the middle. Very strange. And this is where the story starts to get really interesting!

I found myself loving and hating both of the characters many times in this book. That is what makes this story so unique. In many books we love the two main characters or even just one of them the entire way through a story. But not Legend! Marie Lu has created a relationship between her readers and the two characters unlike anything I have experienced before, this is what makes Legend unique.

Legend is fast paced and action filled. I finished it in one sitting, it was just too good to split over a couple! Marie Lu has left me pining away for more!

If you haven't already read Legend, I highly recommend it!

Reading this in very poorly translated Dutch will make you want to light the book on fire. Two stars because the story is probably okayish in English (two fifteen-year-olds involved with genocide and bio-weapons, who doesn't love it?), but I truly only finished the book because I didn't want to see it pop up in my 'currently reading' list every time I openend this app

WHOA! I don't know about you or how this novel affected you but this somehow made me burst into my emotions - the feeling of sympathy, excitement and fear got into me while flipping through its chapters. Freaking AWESOME! It deserves my 5 stars!
-------------------------

Upon finishing, I realized why the title was called Legend. It's not like in any myths we've learned in elementary about how a fruit or tree has sprouted from something out of nowhere but it's quite relevant in a way that June and Day, the two protagonists here, created their own legends dominant enough for the Republic and even the Patriots and Colonies to notice – June went to her first mission as an agent in Commander Jamesons' patrol and hunted the Republic's most wanted criminal Daniel Altan Wing while Day himself, was often able to strategically create destructions to the police, trick and leave no signs then he's nowhere to be found again
Spoiler not until June caught her
. Both Day and June were young (15 years old) and having these strange abilities at such young age was evident that they're both born different. Gifted.

Next thing I noticed is the style of storytelling. This novel shared two different-yet-related stories (life of Day and life of June) and I actually enjoyed how it's written this way in first person while stories were short between chapters and straight to the point. This was hardly a book you can put down. First I was eager to learn from various sides of their lives and second, I was thrilled realizing that these two were actually in the same setting – just different scenarios.

June is from a wealthy family and Day lives in slums but having this sort of distance made their communities grit their teeth against each other. Most of the people who belong to the Republic are the wealthy who passed the Trial, studied at prestigious universities such as Drake and are able to join the military force while the poor barely pass Trial and get educational support so they end up robbing money, food and medicines from the Republic and worst, they're the ones who get afflicted by the plagues.

The conflict of the story made June and Day's destinies meet as June started hunting Day and Day continued to hide while still protecting his family in the shadows. It seemed obvious to expect that two protagonists would face and fight each other in the end but still, the creativity made me adore it more. It also got my attention right from discovering its mysteries.
Spoilerjust so you know, anything that would make my mind work, analyze and get back to the scenes in fast pace - always dead-on excited about it
. I haven't read as much mystery or psychological thriller novels as yet but I've watched a good number of it and I could say I've always been hooked by this stuff. For instance, losing Metias in the scene pinched my heart that I couldn't help but cry from June's memories of her brother but good thing his death actually made things “work” better as June unfolded a lot of secrets behind the Republic and most importantly, her proud State and Country.

Lastly, I both liked Day and June's characters and how fierce fighters they were but in my opinion, Day stood out more. The reason was that Day had no special training whatsoever than what June had but still, he made it clear that he actually knew what he's doing just as June from how he's done his escapes from the military so agile that they weren't able to touch and recognize him through his years of hiding. His lack of wealth made him stronger and persistent than any others. More hopeful.

"Day" Altan Wing: Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time.

June though still made it on par with my other fave heroine Katniss from Hunger Games (only watched the film though). Young fighters rock! June's a genius and school bored her so she kept on challenging herself even if it gets her into BIG trouble.

I highly recommend this novel! :)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This book is unfortunately a mix of multiple dystopian novels I've read in the past. I see subtle references to [b:The Hunger Games|2767052|The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)|Suzanne Collins|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1447303603s/2767052.jpg|2792775], [b:Reboot|13517455|Reboot (Reboot, #1)|Amy Tintera|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1350931774s/13517455.jpg|19075624], [b:Divergent|13335037|Divergent (Divergent, #1)|Veronica Roth|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328559506s/13335037.jpg|13155899], and many others. Technically this is a re read cause I read this book when I was 15 and fucking loved it and since it was available on Libby and i never got around to reading the sequels I thought that I might as well.
Definetly liked it less than the first time mostly cause it took a long time for June to be tolerable but I did enjoy the read and am exited to finally read the sequels

A little cliché but otherwise a good mystery
