This is one of my favorite books that I've read so far this year. Con artists and magicians are a guilty pleasure of mine and this book accomplished the really impressive feat of not just shocking me with one twist, but with two. The characters were compelling, the story was intriguing, and it was very well paced. The only small complaint I had was that the dialogue wasn't always sharp and veered into predictable melodrama from time to time, but other than that this was an excellent book and one that I've already recommended to several friends.

This book is about Natalie, a young woman who is a Magician.  She is having money troubles and she might be in even bigger trouble after she injured a guy during one of her routines.  She decides that she is going to interview a Card Shark and tag along with him to figure out how him and her are different in their card tricks.  She ends up getting involved with another card shark and the story goes from there.  I listened to the book and Julia Whelan narrates it and she always does a stellar job, so it was a really good listen.  I thought that the book was interesting and it kept my attention.  There were some surprises that I wasn't expecting in the book.  For a lot of the book I was really wishing that I could see the card moves that they were talking about, although as a lay person I would've probably missed the trick anyway, haha.

Bluff, by Michael Kardos, was slotted to be my first read of 2024. Surprisingly, though, I read this quietly captivating novel on the last day of 2023 — and in one sitting! It seems like such a simple tale at first, but as the con moves forward, things begin to balloon in a big way until the deceptively shocking end. Bluff is also the January selection for the @MomAdvice Book Club. ⁣
