Teckentrup was flawless, of course, and the pacing of the story was very consistent. I really wish it had more info about any of these historical events, and I especially wish it had additional info about Alexander Haus.

This is probably not a necessary purchase for all libraries, but Teckentrup circs pretty well at my medium sized library.

Berlin. One house. Five families. 100 years of German history - from Imperial Germany to third Reich.

An interesting approach. By using the locus of the house you realise the incredible highs and lows of recent German history.

So compelling but also grounding every time you remember that these are real people and their true lived experiences. I would love to visit the house by the lake.

My 6-year-old loved this. He wanted to read this one again, and again, and again. We have had so many great discussions about this book, and we have looked up some history, and that was a great bonding opportunity.

Recommended for the young history buffs out there.

Great book about the lives of the lake house tenants with a war history of Germany in the background. A real eye-opener to what it was like to live behind the Wall in West and East Germany under the Soviet supervision. I was very impressed with the author's motivation and strength for undertaking such an enormous task of digging up the long forgotten history of his family, searching out the witnesses, collecting the information and eventually writing up the book. Pleased to read about the final solution as to the house and its comeback to the rightful owners.
