Well written and very quick read

Quick enjoyable read linking together some different storylines with Section 31 at the hub. Not a deep dive into the whole Section 31 mythos but enough to integrate it into an interesting TOS story.

Above average, but suffers badly from small universe syndrome, with people from several plot threads turning up in the same spot from across the galaxy.
There is some logic in retconning a secondary character important to the plot of the TOS films as involved in Section 31, but it gives Kirk advanced knowledge that he doesn't use in the films, creating a slight plot irregularity.

I was debating between 4 or 5 stars but I think the climax to this novel(and maybe my soft spot for TOS era trek) bumps it to 5. The connections to the Voyager episode are obvious from a relatively early part of the novel in relation to the rest of the plot so I'd almost advise watching that episodes after this novel. When Kirk, Bones and Spock interact together it is as I expected though Bones is obviously not quite as focused on the mission though I did quite enjoy his arc nontheless. 9/10 for flirting points to Kirk, the most memorable woman are always a challenge to him and I can't ever give him a perfect grade under those circumstances.

A decent Trek book, if not particularly memorable. The pacing was a bit off, and the plot (slightly-mad Federation scientist willing to go too far in the name of progress) has been done before. But there's a nice cameo appearance by the Romulan Commander from The Enterprise Incident -- it was good to see her again and learn what happened after the Original Series episode.

Another fun Star Trek read as I take a slight detour to catch up on the Section 31 series threaded through the Relaunch titles. I enjoyed the early shadows over Kirk's tenure and the way it weaved into established lore.

4/5 A promising start to a series with unnerving implications.

Star Trek meets Spy novel. Good series.
