an archeological act, uncovering the existence of the black female figure, in art, across time. a completely consuming act, that turned the author into art herself due to the collection of their existences and stories.

A collection of poems - some autobiographical - at the center of which is a long poem that consists purely of titles of art pieces with black women in them. Sounds like it wouldn't work, but somehow it packs a real punch by the end. Her other poems leave a mark, as well. Worth checking out.

“I could smell the world all over you. / You gave it to me—a fresh, sharp walnut—pungent and coy. / You cracked it, plucked out its intelligence, / then dropped it in my hand: this deep black joy.” —Second Line
