I'm a little amazed that Sanderson managed to write something under 600 pages, but not only did he accomplish this unprecedented feat, The Emperor's Soul is probably my favorite of his works that I've read so far.

It's a novella about a genius Forger (someone able to magically recreate or change something) who is captured and forced to take on her most ambitious project yet -- recreating a soul. And not just any soul, but the soul of the recently brain-dead emperor.

I loved how clever Shai was, how she was able to read several layers past what people did and said on the surface to their ulterior motives and secret plans, and how she used those insights to inform her decisions. The level of subtext was delicious. This story had everything -- complex schemes, interesting characters, solid world building, kickass action, and quick pacing.

Would definitely recommend for those who have been turned off by Sanderson's longer-winded stories (ahem The Way of Kings).
