3.5 stars really. Tyler writes well and in the classic style of the 'Golden Age' of crime writing - Christie, Chesterton, Canon Doyle etc. You can add to this a fair dash of humour. The end product is an enjoyable book with a good plot and a reading journey that you are glad you embarked on.

Liked the voice and humour, found the actual story a real slog

This is my first time reading a book by this author and I can't say I was a fan. While the mystery was just interesting enough to keep me going, the writing style annoyed and bored me. Some of the humor did make me a smile but a lot of it was too referential and just reminded me of better mysteries. The femme fatale character made me groan and I liked Elsie but I got really annoyed at how every time she showed up, there was always mentions of chocolate and cookies. That's such an overdone way of portraying a fat character and I hated it. I also hated that the only character of colour is a filipino maid who appears once. She's the only character whose race is mentioned and that always irritates me because it implies that every other character is the assumed default of white. So I wasn't a fan of this book and I can't say I'll be reading anything else by this author in the future.
