I really liked how the members of the "breakfast club" in this book highlighted the diversity in the latino community here in the US. Bilingual text and some upset in the various stereotypes were both great, too. Appropriate for grade schoolers, though there are some references to Venezuelan politics, etc. that will likely go over many young readers' heads.

All of this makes it a solid 3 star read. Call me a cynic, but the 'feel good' approach to characterization and plot in current juvenile lit just feels patronizing to me as a reader, so I am stingy with the 4th and 5th stars.

To be in middle school is hard. To be in middle school in a country you don't talk the language, look like others or "home" is a tricky subject... well that can drive you mad. This book puts the challenges of being from the different parts of Latin America in a US school into a beautiful story, with so many of the specific charaterisics that can mark the experience. I absolutle love that we can have this type of books and stories available for everyone.
Ser de Latinoamérica es un regalo, y compartir nuestra cultura es un derecho.
