This is a Constantine book for kids. I sort of hate the idea, but even as I was reading this, I thought of a kid who would probably enjoy it. And maybe in a few years I could sneak them some of the more mature Constantine books. So, I suppose it’s successful in that way. Ryan North and Derek Charm do the best they can with such a strange and difficult task.

A delightfully magical adventure that poses the question “What would John Constantine’s childhood look like…” and answers in the most fun way possible. Ryan North and Derek Charm deliver a story that delivers as much heart as it does comedy.

Absolutely beautiful art by Derek Charm as always; this book is worth it for that alone. But thankfully it is accompanied by a killer story by Ryan North. I haven't read any Hellblazer and my only exposure is the Keanu Reeves movie, so I can't say how faithful/great this homage is but I loved it. Had Scooby Doo vibes and I mean that in the best way - horror and mystery for kids. Highly recommend

I wasn't too invested at first with a kid who stole chocolate from a ghost and then running to demons for sanctuary but got sick of him pretty fast and made his parents send him off to an American bording school. He's using magic mostly as regular tricks and most of his powers disappear while he's in America. It was an alright story, he meets a friend and then he had this witch teacher who was actually possessed by an evil demon. The teacher was black so I was getting some off vibes to what they were actually insinuating by making the bad guy black while the "heroes" were white. But it all cleared up by the end when she got back to normal and ended up being a nice witch who actually taught them magic. Though the text was kind of small so it felt like I was back to reading A Clash of Kings there for a while. The kind demon in America was likeable though. Especially funny when he was wearing a disguise at the hospital, very cute.

Unrated because I don't think I can rate it fairly. It's an adorable middle grade graphic novel about boarding school, friendship, and magic. It's also a terrible story to be branded with the John Constantine name. There is nothing John Constantine about this story. X-Files Origins did the concept better.
