Thoughts:
* Damen and Laurent are a couple of drama llamas at the beginning.
* Slavery was finally addressed!
“ He searched Laurent’s face. ‘When I argued the case for slavery in Arles you didn’t try to change my mind.’
‘It is not a subject for an exchange of ideas. There is nothing to say.’
‘There will be slaves in Akielos. We are a slave culture.’
‘I know that.’
Damen said, ‘Are pets and their contracts so different? Did Nicaise have a choice?’
‘He had the choice of the poor with no other way to survive, the choice of a child powerless to his elders, the choice of a man when his King gives him an order, which is no choice at all, and yet still more than is afforded to a slave.’
Damen felt again the shock of hearing Laurent voice his private beliefs.”

and later:
He heard himself say, "Damianos will end slavery when he becomes King.”

* A particular fact was used as a Big Reveal, but it was so glaringly obvious since book one that I couldn't understand how Damen didn't realized it before then.
SpoilerLaurent was abused by his uncle.

* The resolution reminded me a lot of [b:The Game of Kings|112077|The Game of Kings (The Lymond Chronicles, #1)|Dorothy Dunnett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342486295l/112077._SY75_.jpg|2219130] again. This series is kind of like Lymond fanfiction: gay romance edition. High quality though!
* Enjoyed this series a lot!
