I haven't read Joyce in ages and didn't remember him being so easy to read as this story. I will admit that I was expecting something a little more...supernatural from the story, given the title (maybe I should pick up a Stephen King book next). I don't think I scraped the surface of understanding the text, really, but I enjoyed the atmosphere that he creates with the holiday party and snow-dusted streets of Dublin.

I've never been able to tackle "Ulysses", but this novella makes me love James Joyce. I think I wrote three papers on "The Dead" at BYU. Those last two pages never get old.

The crown jewel of "Dubliners", 'The Dead' is Joyce's most famous short story, and with reason. Borderline sentimental and satirical, Joyce's language shines through forver and always in its perfection and authority.
