The best of the best. Perfect to pick up when you're between books. Personal favs: Francis Macomber, Kilimanjaro, In Another Country, Hills Like White Elephants, The Killers, A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, A Way You'll Never Be & The Gambler, the Nun and the Radio, which no one else seems to like.

i understand that no review is ever really completely objective, but in the case of hemingway this supposed objectivity is completely out of my grasp. i love the mans writing, plain and simple. i love him so much that had i ever run into faulkner, i would have kicked him in the shins for having the audacity to insult hemingway.

see? no objectivity whatsoever.

that being said, i do highly recommend this collection of short stories because many of them present a young writer who is really at the apex of his talent, who makes writing seem so effortless and easy and is able to present headscratching puzzlements in the guise of words that are usually about two syllables long. there is something blissful about being taken for a ride by someone who is in expert control of his/her vehicle and drives with the kind of arrogant abandonment that suggests either craziness (or drunkenness, in hemingways case) or youth.

and yes, predictably, "a clean, well-lighted place" ranks as one of my favorites.

How much do I love it? When I left Tanzania, I asked a friend to carry my copy of this book to the summit of Kili. He did, and then brought it back stateside for me. Four years later, the mud's still there.

Não li todos os contos, mas apenas os que me foram solicitados por meu professor durante o mestrado. Achei alguns bem interessantes, outros muito machistas e desconfortáveis para mim, feminista de carteirinha.

The master at work. Hemingway wrote powerful novellas and short stories. His full-blown novels aren’t too shabby, either!

First time reading Hemingway. I see the appeal but it’s still not complete in a female aspect way. His women were not enough. But I’m glad I read it still
